During the ceremony, Poulsen highlighted the excellent state of conservation and technical updates of the F-16s, stating that “they have served us well over the years” and expressed satisfaction in seeing Argentina become “part of the global F-16 family”.
The ministry recalled that the sale was conducted in close cooperation with the U.S. government, which authorized the transaction. It was also mentioned that Argentina will receive a loan from the United States to help with the partial payment of the fighters and associated missiles. In total, the purchase involves 24 aircraft.
Argentina, in addition to the fighters, will receive “dozens of containers with materials that will allow the aircraft to adapt to the new environment, as well as ensure its local operation and maintenance”.
It is also expected that the fighters will be equipped with a complete arsenal of air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons. Another highlighted aspect was the investment in the Tandil air base to enhance the infrastructure of the VI Air Brigade.
About the F-16 Fighting Falcon
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a lightweight and agile multifunctional fighter, widely recognized for its versatility and reliability. Developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force, its first flight was in 1974, entering service in 1978. The F-16 was designed as a daytime air superiority fighter but has evolved to play a highly capable multirole function.
It features an innovative design that includes a delta wing and a V-tail, and it was one of the first to use a fly-by-wire flight control system, allowing the aircraft to be agile and light. The F-16’s cockpit, designed to give the pilot exceptional visibility, and its inclined ejection seat, which increases the pilot’s G-force tolerance, are other highlights.
Operated by more than 25 countries, the F-16 has become one of the most produced and combat-tested fighters in the Western world, with over 4,600 aircraft built. Its versatility allows it to perform a variety of missions, including ground attacks, aerial combat, and reconnaissance operations.
